    15. PRE- Life with geohazard at the contact between the Alps and the Mediterranean

P.J. Rupnik (Geolog. Survey Slovenia), J. Reitner (Geolog. Bundesanstalt Austria), T. Marjanac (Faculty of Science, Uni. Zagreb) 4 days, 600 €, Rome – Trieste – Istria – Ljubljana – Rome

The life at the corner of the Alps and the Mediterranean has been influenced by geohazard phenomena since the man appeared here (and much earlier). On the other hand, the glaciers, tectonics, earthquakes, flood plains, massive mass wasting events also give this area its appealing looks. The fieldtrip will stop in Eastern Tirol and Carinthia in Austria (mass wasting with a special focus on rock avalanches and their impact on landscape and society exemplified by a medieval earthquake-triggered case close to Villach), in Slovenia (Idrija Mercury mine with ore body tectonically displaced for 3 km, submerged Roman remains in Izola, pre-Roman settlement in tectonically submerged Ljubljana Marsh, Sava fault, the Ljubljana earthquake 1895) and in Croatia (from times of glacial sedimentation to human interventions in nature – Istria and hinterland of Rijeka).
